The Mamojada is a gorgeous, still relatively wild part of inland Sardinia far removed from the baby blue sea and white beaches the island is famous for. The area’s red wines are made with Cannonau (maybe a Sardinian biotype of Grenache), and differ considerably from other Sardinian Cannonau wines. For this reason, the producers of the local Mamojà association have worked with Ian D’Agata over the past year to subdivide their territory in six large valleys or zones (north, northeast, east, south, southwest, northwest), each characterized by different wines that express the differences of their terroir and its Cannonau wines. Finite vineyard areas within each zone or valley called ghirade (somewhat analogous to the Etna volcano’s contrade) further speak of each valley’s uniqueness. In this tasting, Ian D’Agata, a multi-awarded author of wine books on Italian native grapes and wines, along with the producers of Mamojà, an association of Mamojada wineries, will launch the world premier presentation of their territory’s brand new zonation and map, based on the association’s internal debates and studies, followed by a tasting of thirteen Mamojada wines of the Mamojà association highlighting the distinct features of each of the territory’s six different valleys/zones.
