The Growing threat of Neo-Prohibitionism and what the wine industry can do about it - Seminar in collaboration with wine2wine Business Forum

Description

WARNING: IN ORDER TO ATTEND THIS MEETING, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN ENTRY PASS FOR THE EXHIBITION VINITALY 2024 VALID FOR THE DAY IN WHICH THE MEETING TAKES PLACE.

The growing threat of Neo-Prohibitionism to the wine industry is real. Canada recently changed dietary guidelines to 2 drinks of alcohol per week (the US guideline is currently two drinks/day for a male and one drink/day for a female). The USDA is contemplating a revision of US guidelines, which are scheduled to be redone in 2025. If the US follows Canada, which has been indicated, this could dramatically affect US wine consumption for years to come. Ireland just introduced labeling requirements that equate wine to tobacco. Wine consumption is down throughout Europe. The threat from anti-alcohol crusaders - combined with competition from cocktails, RTD’s and cannabis - is existential for wine producers.

This panel will examine the forces behind the Neo-Prohibitonist movement, current Wine Opinions research on Gen Z and Millennials’ attitudes toward wine/alcohol and health, and explore potential actions wine producers can take to advocate for wine as part of a holistic and life-affirming lifestyle. It will be moderated by renowned industry journalist, Felicity Carter. Panelists include Amy Gross of Women for Wine Sense (a US wine advocacy association that has a history of fighting back against anti-alcohol forces) and Gino Colangelo of Colangelo & Partners whose agency sponsored the Wine Opinions research.
