Verduno Pelaverga is the name of one of Italy’s currently hottest and most exciting wines, made in Piedmont with the Pelaverga Piccolo variety (there is another, unrelated Pelaverga Grosso variety that is typical of another part of Piedmont). The Pelaverga Piccolo production area covers the territory of Verduno and parts of the territories of communes of Roddi and La Morra: all three are most famous for being three of only eleven communes allowed to produce Barolo. Today, there are roughly thirty hectares of Pelaverga Piccolo planted; of those, slightly more than 25 hectares are in the Verduno commune’s territory, 3.96 hectares are in Roddi’s and 1.62 hectares in La Morra’s. Production of Verduno Pelaverga DOC is steadily increasing (over 200,000 bottles in the 2002 vintage); but truth is, the wine is so popular that the volume produced annually is not nearly enough to satisfy demand. Most producers sell out of their stocks almost immediately. There are now nineteen wineries (and about the same number of bottlers) producing a Verduno Pelaverga DOC wine, and there exists an official producers association, founded in 2000, that has 18 members. The wine is bright red-ruby in colour, brimming with red fruits and spices on the nose (Pelaverga Piccolo is a lightly aromatic red grape) and in the mouth. Bright, juicy and fresh, it is a red wine that’s easy to drink lightly chilled too and that will match with many different dishes (pastas, pizzas, poultry, beef and even fish).
In this tasting of Verduno Pelaverga DOC organized by the Verduno E’ UNO association at Vinitaly, award-winning wine writer Ian D’Agata and a few of the producers will present many different Verduno Pelaverga vintages and wines.
