The idea of giving birth to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano "Pieve" (in addition to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Riserva), comes from a methodological path that has seen the consensus and participation of all the producing companies. A path of study within the name itself, which thanks to moments of encounter, comparison and collective analysis, has led to the birth of a unique "vision" of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. A view supported by research, even from experts. On the one hand, we have launched research from a geological and pedological point of view, a theme that has been dear to the heart of the Consortium since the 1990s (we were among the first in Italy to "zoning" the production area and subsequently to retrace it on a map made by Enogea); on the other hand, the deepening has also been done in libraries and historical archives, up to the Cadastre Leopoldino of 1800. A wine that will have as characteristics the territory (precisely with the subzones), the grape variety that will be linked to Sangiovese and only the complementary native vines allowed by the specification with grapes exclusively produced by the bottling company. The other novelty is that an internal commission composed of oenologists and technicians will be established at the Consortium which will have the task of evaluating, before the steps provided for by the legislation, that the characteristics correspond to the specification itself. The historical study of the geology and geography of the territory has led to the identification of 12 zones, defined in the UGA production specification (additional geographical units), which are preceded by the words "Pieve" on the label. This aspect represents the identity of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano that looks to the past.
