Prof. Attilio Scienza
A full professor at the University of Milan, he has taught Grapevine Genetic Improvement at DiSAA and Territory Viticulture at the inter-university Master’s program of the University of Turin, in the Asti campus. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of cultivation techniques of grapevine physiology and genetics. He is the author of more than 350 scientific publications in both national and international journals, conference presentations, textbooks, and monographs mainly devoted to grapevine and viticulture. He also authored 23 books in Italian and English on topics mainly related to wine culture and civilization. From 1985 to 1991, he was the Director of the Istituto Agrario di S. Michele all’Adige (the research and training institute branch of the Edmund Mach Foundation). He is Chairman of the National Committee for DOC Wines. He is an Ordinary Academician of the Italian Academy of Vine and Wine, and an Ordinary Member of the Georgofili Academy. During his long career, Prof. Scienza e has been recognized with numerous awards for his research and writing, including the AEI Prize for Scientific Research in 1991, the Morsiani International Prize in 2006, and the OIV Prize in the discipline of viticulture for the best scientific book on viticulture and vine culture issues in 2003, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2023. Since June 2018, Attilio Scienza has also collaborated with Vinitaly International as Chief Scientist of the Vinitaly International Academy. He was awarded the Masi International “Civiltà del Vino” Prize in 2021.
Prof. Carlo Pozzi
Carlo Pozzi graduated in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Milan. He earned his PhD in molecular genetics at the Max-Planck Institute in Cologne, where he also completed his postdoctoral studies, working on barley genetics under the guidance of Prof. Salamini. He focused on the genetics and genomics of fruit plants, particularly peach, working as a Principal Investigator at the Parco Tecnologico Padano Foundation in Lodi. He then continued his career in Switzerland, at Philip Morris International, where he managed molecular genetics projects in tobacco. He later returned to Italy, to the Edmund Mach Foundation in San Michele all’Adige, where he worked on optimizing research management for apple trees and grapevines. He teaches at the universities of Milan, Turin, and Copenhagen.
Luca Toninato
Ph.D. in Agronomy and an expert in viticulture, Luca Toninato is involved in coordinating numerous experimental projects in the field of genetic improvement of grape varieties (grapevine germplasm conservation, clonal selections), enhancing the interaction between varieties and the territory through vineyard zoning, and sustainable and precision viticulture projects. He also provides Consulting and Training services for organizations, public entities, and companies. He is the Vice President of the cooperative AGER – Agricoltura e Ricerca, a company founded in 1993 that carries out experimental projects in viticulture, ornamental plants, and animal husbandry. He is a founding member and Vice President of Enogis SRL, a company established in 2018 that has developed an information platform for agricultural data management and the development of predictive models.

The session will be divided into two parts: the first will explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on plant genetics, and the second will delve into the main applications of precision viticulture (PV).
AI offers great potential to transform agriculture and ensure food security for future generations. We will see how these technologies are optimizing cultivation strategies by improving yields, nutritional content, and climate resilience of crops. We will explain that AI allows for the analysis of large amounts of genomic data, facilitating the identification of desirable genetic traits, genomic selection, and phenotyping.
In this context, PV is a set of techniques and technologies that enables “doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right place,” making rational agriculture possible, strongly founded on sustainability and the enhancement of the terroir. We will explore how - thanks to tools such as GPS, GIS, and various monitoring systems - PV allows for the collection of the necessary information, creating a complete picture of the vineyard and grape quality, and then setting up a rational crop management system. In particular, we will focus on variable-rate agronomic interventions (VRA) and vigor maps from which derivative maps can be obtained, highlighting homogeneous areas within the vineyard.
