Speaker - Fred F.A. Nijhuis
Fred F.A. Nijhuis

Experience in sales, marketing and communication helped Fred Nijhuis to approach the wonderful world of wine in different ways. Focused on facts and the essence of specific topics, he has developed his own style and place in the Dutch wine scene. He shares his knowledge and 40 years of experience with professionals and private connoisseurs in the Netherlands and is frequently asked to consult producers, consortia, PR-agencies, importers - among others - concerning the Dutch market.

He has a strong opinion regarding many topics, quite often challenging mainstream media. Education has become a specialty, especially “teaching the teachers”: most courses in the Netherlands are on WSET level 1-3; in general, Nijhuis’ educational programs start at WSET level 4. Quality and content characterize his work as independent professional. He chooses not to be involved in any kind of trade. Inspired to raise the level of knowledge of all people dedicated to wine, he organizes educational workshops and wine related events, including the Dutch Blind Tasting Championship. He is not limited to, but regarded as one of the most influential experts on Italian wines and is one of the very few Ambassadors of I Vini del Piemonte worldwide. He works with a limited number of associates and publishes articles on his personal website.

Dutch consumers are known to drink serious quantities of milk, coffee and beer. Yet wine has always been part of their business, though more focused on trade than consumption. The market in the Netherlands is regarded as ‘price driven’ and bulk wines and special discounts seem to be the most important aspects. The lifestyle and preferences of the youngest generation of consumers in combination with changes in national efforts to limit the consumption of alcohol, offer many challenges for the sales of wine in the Netherlands. Fred Nijhuis will focus on the characteristics of the Dutch wine scene with special attention to possibilities and chances for Italian (and other) wines.
