Anastasia Naumetskaya

Anastassiya conducts wine courses for those who want to better understand wines, compose and curate wine lists, host oenogastronomic dinners, and advise private clients on selecting wines for their home collections.

There are two versions of how wine and Anastassiya fell in love with each other. The first one is called work experience and resume: as the Editor-in-Chief of the gastronomic magazine Gurman, she went to the VieVinum wine exhibition in 2006 for the first time and took part in a wine tour for specialists in Austria. Then there was training in Moscow, trips to other wine regions, and the first tastings, which led to cooperation with restaurants – that’s how her long-standing interest in wine turned into the Sommelier profession.

The second version, as her family jokes, is genetic: her great-grandfather, a German, was a winemaker in Azerbaijan, and the vines he cultivated laid the foundation for her work and became an important part of her life.

Anastassiya is the captain of Kazakhstan’s team of skiing journalists, which is part of the international SCIJ club. How do sports combine with wine? Perfectly – it’s her personal assemblage for balance!

Her credo: wine is a belief in the best tandem between nature and humans, and it’s always an exciting journey into history and geography. Wine is a full-fledged conversationalist for various occasions, but most importantly, it’s an opportunity to learn more about people and the culture of their country. And as long as she continues to be fascinated by these facets and discover something new, she wants to share her emotions and knowledge with others.

The skyscrapers of the capital Astana, the developing tourist and wine market of eastern Kazakhstan, the high Tian Shan mountains surrounding Almaty with a ski resort at an altitude of 3,200 meters above sea level, and, surprising for many wine connoisseurs, a new terroir – Assa Valley in Kazakhstan.

The continental climate of southern Kazakhstan, about 200 kilometers from the Chinese border, becomes even more pronounced due to the significant mountain elevations. Almaty is located at an altitude of about 900 meters above sea level, and its best vineyards are at around 1,000 meters.

This session will present a brief history of winemaking in the Country: the earliest evidence of viticulture in Kazakhstan dates back to the 7th century AD around Shymkent and at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains in the Almaty region. Topics will include state vineyards in the early 20th century in Almaty, Shymkent, and Taraz; the collapse of the Soviet Union and the anti-alcohol campaign; the new region in the world’s wine palette - Assa Valley Almaty, Kazakhstan - and the uniqueness of the terroir and brand.

The session will also discuss wine regions and brands from Italy represented in the Kazakhstan market; wine trading companies in Kazakhstan, reporting comments from brand managers; prospects for promotion and development, and distribution channels. The speaker will then analyse recent wine trends for consumers, Italian cuisine spots in Kazakhstan, and restaurants with national cuisine and Italian wines that stand out as a unique format of eno-gastronomy.
