Sibari Archaeological Area

The stunning setting of Parco Cavallo will host the enormous Mediterranean Wine Showcase with the finest wines from Calabria. When the Greeks colonised the coasts of Calabria they named the area "Enotria": Land of Wine. Local peoples, the Greeks and then the Romans saw the creation in this region of one the world's most important patrimonies of grape varieties. Vinitaly and the City will take you on a journey to discover the fascinating history of Calabrian winemaking and its native white grape varieties (Pecorello, Greco, Mantonico and Guarnaccia) and red grape varieties (Magliocco, Galioppo, Greco Nero and Nocera) interpreted as still as well as sparkling or even sweet wines. From the coastlines to the mountains, from vineyards to the glass, winemakers themselves will explain this extraordinary journey through tastings and unique experiences. The food and wine itinerary will continue with wines selected by Gambero Rosso and the involvement of wine consortia from other regions and countries. The trip will be accompanied by Wine Talks conducted by oenologist and wine influencer Sissi Baratella.

A little history of the Parco del Cavallo Archaeological Area

This part of Calabria, known in topographic terms as Sibaritide, saw the appearance, expansion and ultimate decline of the great polis of Sibari. Here, over the periods following the destruction of the Greek city, its ruins were partially overlapped, initially by the Hellenist town of Thurii and then by the Roman settlement named Copia. This exceptional stratification means that Sibari is one of the largest and most important sites in the Mediterranean dating from archaic and classical ages.
